Understanding Cloudy Pool Water: Causes, Prevention & Treatment

Having your own pool is great. No more swimming in crowded public pools or paying for tickets to get in all summer. The only trick is that having your own pool means doing your pool maintenance, and, if you’ve ever had something go wrong, you know how serious a problem it can be.

One of the most common concerns for home pool owners is cloudy water. It can be hard to understand how a pool can go from crystal clear water one day, to cloudy the next.

Here’s what you need to know about what cloudy pool water is, what it means, the risks and health problems associated with it, and, most importantly, how you can get your pool water clean and clear again.

Why is Pool Water Cloudy?

  1. Cloudy pool water isn’t simply an aesthetic issue; it frequently signals unbalanced pool situations.
  2. A clogged or inefficient filter does function improperly. Because of this, debris and contaminants circulate causing cloudy water. Insufficient filtration run times can result in poor water clarity. Run times that are here may need some improvement.
  3. High or low pH as well as alkalinity, excessive calcium, or insufficient sanitizer levels (like chlorine) may all cause unbalanced water chemistry that can make the water appear dull or hazy.
  4. Chlorine or Sanitizer Is Insufficient. Low chlorine levels permit bacteria and also other microorganisms to grow, and pool water then becomes more murkier.
  5. Dust and dirt and pollen and sunscreen and oils introduce microscopic particles that cloud up the water and disrupt chemical balance in addition to heavy pool usage.
  6. Weather events cause cloudy water because heavy rain and wind dilute pool chemicals and introduce debris.

Preventing Cloudy Pool Water

Daily pool maintenance is very important to keep your pool clean, and safe to swim in.

  • Utilize your filtration. Let your pump run for 8 - 12 hours every day, especially when heavily used, and after significant rain. Always clean and/or backwash your filter so it's doing its job. Pool Maxx has some great quality filter cartridges, and recommends using Pool Maxx Glass Filter Media for longer lasting filtration and best debris capture.
  • Chemical balance is very important. Test your pool water at least once a week with Pool Maxx Pool & Spa Test Strips to check pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. You will want to keep pH levels between 7.2 - 7.6. If you need to raise or lower pH levels, use Pool Maxx pH Up or pH Down.
  • Use sanitizers. You can achieve free chlorine levels in your pool, between 1 - 4ppm, simply by using a reliable source of chlorine when the pool is heavily used. Using Chloro Maxx 90 Granules works great as a continuous disinfectant and provides a large enough dose of pool water treatment.
  • Keep your pool clean. Skim the top of the pool every day for leaves and bugs, and brush the walls or floor at least once a week. Pool Maxx has heavy duty skimming nets that will make it even easier to remove debris from your pool.

Treatment of Cloudy Pool Water

If your pool water turns cloudy, there's no need to panic. A few simple steps will return the sparkling clarity your pool once had. Here are some simple steps we at Pool Maxx recommend in addition to some reputable products for you to consider:

  • Test Water and Balance: The first step is always to test and balance your water chemistry starting with pH and sanitizer. Use Pool Maxx Test Strips and adjust the pH with Pool Maxx pH Up/Down and sanitizing levels with Chloro Maxx 90 Granules.
  • Clean/Replace your Filter: Dirty filters are usually the biggest reason cloudy pool water stays cloudy. Replace your cartridges or media (Pool Maxx Glass Filter Media) and run your filter continually for 24 hours, even backwashing if necessary.
  • Shock the Pool: You'll want to eliminate the organic contaminants, causing some of the cloudiness by shocking either with Pool Maxx Shock Treatment or Chloro Maxx 90 Granules.
  • Sparkle Maxx Clarifier: This concentrated clarifier bonds tiny particles together so your filter can more easily remove them. You should dilute Sparkle Maxx as the label indicates, pour around the edges of the pool with the pump running, and filter for 8 hours or more. You can swim in the pool after only 15 minutes.
  • Clear Maxx Flocculant: For persistent cloudiness or after a lot of debris, Clear Maxx will cause the particles to clump together and settle on the bottom so you can vacuum to waste. It is pH-neutral and can be used in all pool systems. Always vacuum the debris to waste, not through the filter, and only swim in the pool when the water is clear.
  • Frequent Enzyme/Clarifier Use: Use Sparkle Maxx weekly to keep water clarity, prevent cloudiness in the future, and decrease sanitizer needs.
  • Treat Algae First: If your pool has algae, you should treat with a correct algaecide prior to clarifying the pool. No clarifier will clarify a pool that is green with algae.

With the right treatment and regular care, it is easy to keep your pool water clear and sparkling all the time.
